Welcome to Mason-Dixon! I take it you’re just passing through?

Actually, I was wondering if I could spend the night.
Well, so long as it’s just a night. I don’t want the waiting list to get any longer than it already is.

Yeah. Just passing through.
Oh good. For a second I thought you might be moving in.
You seem nice enough, but the waiting list is already long enough as it is.

What’s this about a waiting list?
It’s the system we have to use the shacks. Instead of cramming everyone into a few houses, we decided it’d be better if we rotated.
That way, everyone gets a chance to live like a king or queen for a few months.

Whose turn is it this month?
Marie gets the small house, and Cooper gets the mayor’s shack. He’s pretty much mayor of the town anyway, so the rotation worked out.

Why is it better if you rotate?
Well, the shacks get too crowded. Most of us have a hard time living in the same town, let alone sleeping in the same room.
That’s when Cooper got the idea to split everyone up. And to make sure everything is fair, we each get a turn in the homes.

Do you get a lot of new people coming into town?
Not a lot, but it doesn’t take much to thin out the rotation.
When there was six of us, we each got four months a year.
With Molerat moving in, we all had to give him two of our weeks just to make things even.

I want to go back to my previous questions.
Sure.

Do you offer any services?
I’m actually the town cook, believe it or not.
The stove doesn’t work in the conventional sense. But I just emptied it out and filled it up with charcoal.

What do you have for sale?
Everything you see here.
Take a look.

What are your thoughts on the other settlers?
Most of us like to keep to ourselves. We’re a town of runaways and vagrants, so it’s hard to trust people no matter how well you get to know them.

Is it really safe to go back out there?

Thanks so much for helping us out. I thought I was a goner for sure.

You ever need anything, just ask.

Let me know if you need anything. I’ll still have to charge you, but I might throw an extra serving on the plate, just because.

How will the waiting list change?
Well, with Marie dead and Randy too, I think Molerat will get the shack next.
With only four of us, that means we all get half a year. It’s not the way I would’ve liked it to happen, but it does give us more space.

Well, it was Molerat’s turn, but now he’s dead too. So I guess Susan’s next up.
Either way, it means we all get eight months a piece. I’ll still be out here most days though. I don’t trust either Cooper or his daughter to cook.

I really enjoyed cooking for everyone. It’s gonna be sad to see all the empty chairs.

Hellos/Goodbyes

Back again, huh. How can I help you?

What can I do for you?

Later.

Til next time.

All right.
