GABRIEL

(video is for full quest, gabriel at the beginning and end, face/race subject to change but he’s the same age as the player, young adult)

player greeting

(Sigh) Once more unto the breach…

How do you think you’ll do on the test?
It doesn’t matter. I already know how this ends. But maybe I’ll get lucky and the truth will come out instead.

What about your parents? What did they do?
The Palmers tell me they were scouts. They’d go out into the wastes and collect data.
Anne said they died saving the vault from a raider horde. But I can’t even see myself saving Amata from Butch.

What are your thoughts on the G.O.A.T.?
I don’t mind the test per se, but I question the timing.
How many great men found their calling at sixteen?

Sounds like you just don’t know what you want to be.
Perhaps, but I refuse to believe a piece of paper does.

I have.
Then you’re one of the lucky ones. The rest of us need more time to sort things out.

I can name a few off the top of my head.
But they’re the exception, not the rule. Look at our class. None of us really know what we want.

It doesn’t matter. As a member of this community, you do what needs to be done.
Then you’re a slave. There’s no point even thinking at all.

Are you implying you’re destined for more?
If I was sure of that, I wouldn’t be taking this test. At this point I’m not hoping for an answer, just more time to find one.

take test, if interrupted

You know, the longer you stand there, the longer the rest of us have to wait.

Some of these questions make me think our vault is doomed.

Gabriel turns in test.

I’m done.

Hm…interesting.

There’s nothing interesting about any of this. Least of all, your opinion.

test finished

Well, I guess it’s done. No turning back now.

What did your test say?
To be honest, Anne already told me what I’ll be doing. It’s classified. Let’s just say we won’t be seeing much of each other anymore.

So what are you going to do about the test results?
Right now, I have no choice but to abide by them.
But things change. I just have to make sure I survive long enough to see it happen.

(for this line, he’s referring to a kid version that got tummy-aches at the player’s birthday party)

How are things with you? Staying healthy?
No more tummy-aches, if that’s what you mean. I still think there was something in that cake.
Where I’m going though, stomach pain is the least of my worries.

I have to go.
Good luck.

after many trials, the player finds Gabriel is hiding out in an old vault

It turns out we weren’t the only ones.

Every vault dweller from here to Reno had to take this test, and the only thing that isn’t surprising is the result.
But mark my words: someday, all these vaults will belong to the free.

Welcome home, brother. I’m glad you can finally see it for what it really is.

You’re no brother of mine, asshole.
Heh, I never did make an effort to bond with anyone here.
And I guess recent events have only made things worse.
But before you draw your weapon, maybe you’d like to hear what I have to say first.

It’s good to see you after all this time.
Huh, that’s not the response I was expecting, or the one I was hoping for.
It might make what I’m about to ask you to do more difficult. But I hope you do it all the same.
Still, you probably have a few questions you want to ask me first. So go ahead, ask away.

I suppose if there was any place I’d call home, it’d be this dump.
True. And while I’ve lived in worse places than this, it’s hard to imagine a more severe punishment.

This isn’t our vault, stupid. No wonder you failed the illustrious GOAT.
It’s not the same vault, but it carries with it all the same burdens.
It doesn’t matter what number you wore on your back. We were all wearing collars in the end.

What happened to you?
You pretty much know the story. The GOAT said I was born to be a scout.
And with the vault in trouble, we needed to make contact. Some of the others asked me to scout the wastes and make sure it was safe.
I guess when I didn’t come back, they got their answer.

How long did you spend in captivity?
Three years. Hmph. Don’t worry, I don’t expect you to know what that means. Three years for you was probably a flash in the pan.
Time is different when you’re free. You get caught up in memories, and you get busy making plans.
But a slave has no past, and he has no future.
All that exists is the present. And every second feels like a lifetime.

What is this vault? How did you find it?
When I escaped, my first thought was to return to Vault 101.
I didn’t know what I wanted…vengeance, forgiveness, or just something familiar…but the point was moot. I didn’t remember where it was.
So I found myself wandering these tunnels, fumbling in the dark, when the floor collapsed beneath me.
And then there it was, like a sign from god. The place the Free Men would call home.

What is the Army of the Free Men? What are your goals?
Whether it was a collar around my neck or a number on my back, I’ve spent my entire life as a slave.
I started The Army of the Free Men so no one will ever have to experience the same.

Before we end this, I have one question. Why kill Alicia?
To bring you here.

Wherever I’ve gone, I’ve taught my men to let go of their fear. It’s what keeps them safe.
But now that they’ve tasted freedom, they’re living in fear again.
They’re scared of losing the ones they love…people like Alicia. They’re afraid to die.
And the longer I live, and the more power I gain…the worse example I set.
When I visited the Temple of the Union, it wasn’t a man who led them. It was a symbol. The head of Abraham Lincoln.
My men need a symbol of their own, an ever present reminder to let go of their fear.
That’s why they need to see me die, and why it needs to be at the hands of my slaver.
And as the Hero of Vault 101, there’s no one better suited than you.

You want me to kill you?
Quick and painlessly, if possible. But I can’t promise the Free Men will do the same for you.
Either way, I’m telling you because I don’t think it matters what I say.
It’s like I told you the day we took this test. I already know how this ends.

What will your death accomplish?
My death will remind them of what’s at stake. Your death will prove the battle can be won.

Why am I your slaver?
You keep thinking in terms of people and men. You’re a symbol. To the outside world, you are Vault 101.
The same is true for slave masters. You’re not just my master, you’re theirs too. And until you die, we can never be safe.

What happens if I refuse?
I’m nobody’s master. I would never force your hand. But choices come with consequences.
Kill me, and the Armies of the Free will seek my vengeance.
Let me live and I will take the people closest to you, one by one until you do.
Starting with the one you brought here.

Where’s Audrey? What have you done with her?
What any man has a right to do when someone invades their home. But I’m giving you choice. Kill me, and she’ll have a fighting chance.

Why is it so important for your men to let go of their fear?
Because if they don’t, they’ll find themselves back in chains.

I’m ready to decide.
Then make your choice.

 if you click on gabriel
Go on. Make your choice. It’s your right as one of the free.

If gabriel is not interrupted, he will turns toward the light from the projector and recite Henry V, which he did when you first met. This speech I’ll probably play by ear to see how well it fits, but should be delivered passionately.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead!
In peace, there ’s nothing so becomes a man,
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood!

kill gabriel

(dying words)
Once more…
