Why do you say that?
Because he’s making them soft. Kids like that, the wastes will chew ’em up and spit ’em out.
What is it?
Just something I cooked up in my spare time.
It’s a BB gun that shoots live rounds. Figure it’ll be easier to learn with.
Have you ever considered training those children yourself?
Sure, I’ve thought about it, but I can’t.
Character in a quest. Tough, wastelander type, who lives in an abandoned train car with a dog. She also helps a schoolteacher named Richard who lives nearby by giving them supplies.
She lost a baby when she was shot in the stomach, so she struggles being around kids and never visits the school. But she also worries about them as any mother would. So she tries to convince the player to arm them so they can protect themselves. Depending on player choices, Richard may die and she may end up having to watch the children.
Hellos
Haven’t seen you around here before. What can I do for you?
Back again, huh. What can I do for you?
Need something?
Can you fix my weapons and armor?
Sure thing.
Let’s see what needs fixing.
What do you have for sale?
Just what you see here.
Take a look.
Goodbyes
Bye.
See ya.
Is it hard living out here alone?
Well, I got my dog with me, and raiders knocking on my doorstep. The way I figure, that’s company enough.
Richard over at the theater asked me to pick up some supplies.
So he did.
Look, I don’t know if I should be saying this, seeing as it’s not my business.
But if you ask me, he’s killing those kids.
Why do you say that?
Because he’s making them soft. Kids like that, the wastes will chew ’em up and spit ’em out.
So Richard’s a murderer. Can’t say I’m surprised.
No, no, I don’t mean it that way. It’s all that artsy fartsy crap he’s teaching those kids.
Sure, they’ve got food now, but I’m not gonna be around forever. At some point, those kids are gonna have to hunt for themselves.
That’s why in addition to these supplies, I want you to deliver this.
What is it?
Just something I cooked up in my spare time.
It’s a BB gun that shoots live rounds. Figure it’ll be easier to learn with.
Giving a child a loaded weapon sounds like a horrible idea.
Well, I meant for you to give it to Richard, with the hope he has enough sense to let the kids use it.
There’s also a manual in there that’ll teach ’em the basics. But in the end it’s not exactly rocket science.
You just point and shoot.
Good thinking. It’d be easier to hide from Richard as well.
I don’t know. It’s probably best you check with him first. In the end, they’re his kids, not mine.
But if he says okay, then you’ll find a manual in there that’ll help them with the basics.
I know just the kid to give it to.
I actually meant for you to give it to Richard. Just as an option. Ultimately, they’re his kids, so it’s his call.
It’s probably best to hand this over to Richard.
I agree. I’m just trying to nudge him toward my way of thinking. And maybe it’d be a little easier to accept coming from you.
I should mention there’s also a manual in there that’ll teach ’em the basics.
Goodbye
All right. Make sure to give Richard that gun.
Why not?
(Sigh) Raiders took my only daughter when she was still in my belly. Now I can’t so much as look at a kid without…well, point is, it can’t be me.
after gun is given
Didn’t expect you back so soon. What’s wrong?
Richard’s dead. A raider killed him.
Damn. Hate to say I told him so, but I did. What about the kids?
They’re fine.
Good. Then it’s not too late for them. Hopefully their next guardian will teach them a thing or two about the real world.
They’re okay, but it’s only a matter of time before another raider walks into that hall.
That’s what I’ve said from the beginning. Someone needs to train those kids.
Filthy and annoying as ever.
Well, better that than dead. But it won’t be long before they join Richard, if they keep doing what they’re doing.
You could train those children.
<angry, lashes out>I said “no” once already, didn’t I?
With Richard dead, the situation’s changed. There’s no one else.
Don’t you think I know that? Goddamnit…I just…I don’t know if I’m ready.
Does it matter if you’re ready? Those children need you.
(sigh)Sometimes I look at the calendar and think, “Today would’ve been her birthday.”
In the end she never got one. Never got to see the world. Then I look at the world and wonder if she wasn’t better off.
But you’re right. She deserved a chance to decide for herself, and so do those kids.
What does it matter if I’m ready or not?
All right, I’ll go. I can’t promise I’ll be any good at it. I might just see those kids and turn into ball of tears. But I’ll try.
I see. Perhaps it’s better they learn to defend themselves.
No, that won’t do either. But still…it just doesn’t feel right.
It’d almost be like I was replacing her, you know? And I don’t know if that’s fair to any of them.
But she wouldn’t have wanted me to stand by and do nothing either. At the very least, I’ve got to try.
Okay. To be honest, I don’t really care either way.
God, listen to yourself. Is that what I sound like? Like someone who doesn’t care?
Say what you want about Richard, but he still put his neck on the line.
I thought I knew better, but look at me. I’m just standing here doing nothing while the world rots around me.
So you’re going to take care of them?
I guess so. I know I’m not gonna be much of a parent. And I don’t think I’ll ever love those kids like I loved my own.
But for their sake, somebody’s gotta try.
I’ve decided to let the kids keep doing their plays. We’ll do target practice every other day.
They’re good kids. I’m glad you convinced me to watch them.
Normally I’d have them start by shooting radroaches, but that won’t do since they keep one as a pet.
Mack’s a smart kid. He’ll make for a good soldier.
Sally has good leadership qualities. She’s a quick thinker too.
