Originally, it was theorized the device was used for electroplating, but other historians contend the device was used for electrotherapy, using controlled voltage to heal injuries.

However, while experts differ on its intended design, often fighting to the death over the smallest of details in their scientific papers, they do agree that the object was eventually converted for recreational use.

So while the topic of re-volting and the use of stimulants may seem like a current fad, it has its origins in ancient times.
